Illinois Named a Safest State to Live During a Nuclear War Maybe
I was always under the impression that Illinois would be one of the first states to be attacked during a nuclear war, but there's a new scenario that has experts saying the Land of Lincoln might very well be one of the best states in America to live in if a nuclear war were to occur.
I just came across this study shared by Newsweek where they name what they believe will be the states with the highest survival rates if a worst-case scenario occurs where nuclear weapons are used. They were looking at one specific scenario where an enemy targets missile silos in the U.S. heartland.
The scenario simulates an attack on United States nuclear missile silos in Montana, North Dakota and Nebraska. What they found is the fallout simulations showed radiation would tend to not affect Illinois as much as nearby states like Kansas, Missouri and Iowa.
While I understand their theory, I think the likelihood of a nuclear attack happening with just silos being targeted is naive. You can count on Chicago along with New York and Los Angeles being a first-strike priority along with the many military bases like Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.
Even if a limited strike only occurred on US missile silos, you can't tell me that any place in America would REALLY be a good place to live. A breakdown in society along with the panic that would inevitably happen would make anyplace in America a bad place to be. Let's hope that none of these scenarios ever becomes a reality.
