
Is It Legal in Indiana to Ride in the Back of a Pickup Truck?
Growing up in the 70s, 80s, and even the 90s, it was not uncommon to see people riding around in the back of a pickup truck. That was just something you did, especially on a warm summer day. My buddies and I wouldn't hesitate to hop in the back of a truck and go for a ride. Now that I'm older and (hopefully) wiser, I can say that I would NOT want my kids to travel that way.
Is It Actually Legal in Indiana?
There's no question that riding in the bed of a pickup truck isn't the smartest thing you can do - the question is whether or not it's legal. Here in Indiana, it's a bit of a grey area - the answer is yes and no. Let me explain.

Here's What Indiana Law Says
In Indiana, no law specifically prohibits riding in the bed of a pickup truck, so technically, it is NOT illegal. Here comes the big BUT. Indiana's seatbelt law says that all passengers in a moving vehicle must be properly restrained with a seat belt. So unless your truck bed is equipped with seat belts, you are breaking the law by riding back there.

Safety First - Even When It’s Fun
While the idea of riding in the back of a pickup truck might seem appealing and/or nostalgic, especially during warm Indiana summers, it just isn’t safe. The passengers are exposed to the elements and really don't have any protection in the event of sudden stops or collisions. And as we’ve established, no seat belts mean you could be ticketed.
