As we are basking in the sun and much warmer temperatures this weekend, Mother Nature and Old Man Winter have more dangerously cold temperatures on the way.

Arctic Blast Brings Dangerous Cold to the Tri-State

Residents of Southern Indiana, Western Kentucky, and Southeastern Illinois should prepare for a prolonged period of dangerously cold weather starting Sunday, January 19, and lasting through Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky, has issued an advisory warning of an Arctic outbreak bringing bitterly cold temperatures and life-threatening wind chills to the region.

What to Expect During This Arctic Blast

The coldest temperatures will hit during the overnight and early morning hours. Wind chill values are expected to drop into the single digits and teens, with localized areas dipping below zero. Daytime highs will struggle to rise above the 10s and 20s. While temperatures are expected to moderate after Wednesday, residents are urged to take precautions during this extreme cold spell.

Local Warming Centers Open to Provide Relief

For those in need of shelter, the Evansville Rescue Mission has activated its White Flag protocols. This initiative aims to provide safe, warm spaces for individuals experiencing homelessness. A daytime warming station will be available at their Main Campus on East Walnut Street in downtown Evansville, where free hot coffee will also be provided.

The Evansville/Vanderburgh County Emergency Management Agency encourages residents to check on vulnerable populations and ensure they have access to heated spaces.
