Indiana Governor Enacts Vital ‘Green Alert’ Legislation: What It Means for Hoosiers
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb recently signed nearly 70 new bills into law for 2024. When dealing with that many, there are bound to be some laws that could be considered "less important" than others. Indiana House Bill 1021 is NOT one of those bills - it is, in fact, extremely important for a lot of Hoosiers.

What Does a "Green Alert" Mean in 2024 in Indiana?
We all know that an Amber Alert means a child (under the age of 18) is missing and believed to have been abducted and is in danger of serious bodily harm or death. In more recent years, a Silver Alert has been created to let the public know that an elderly, developmentally, or cognitively impaired person has gone missing and is determined to be at risk. In 2024, a Green Alert will be instituted in Indiana, indicating that a veteran is missing and is at risk. Bill 1021 also does the following...
Creates certain duties and reporting requirements for law enforcement agencies concerning missing veterans at risk. Provides immunity for a broadcaster who broadcasts, an electronic billboard operator who displays a green alert notification, and a person who establishes or maintains a green alert website under an agreement with the state police department. Makes technical corrections.

It's nice to see Indiana taking a proactive step toward protecting veterans in our communities. The significance of the Green Alert system (which should go into effect on July 1, 2024) cannot be overstated. It provides a critical lifeline for our most vulnerable veterans and their families.
