Move Over, Barbie! Ken’s Getting a Spooky Series of Makeovers from an Indiana Artist
I first met Sandy McCoy at the Fear Expo in Owensboro earlier this year. From our very first encounter, her love of Halloween and everything macabre and scary was clear. What I didn't realize initially is just how wonderful an artist she is. And, naturally, just in time for Halloween, that artistry is on full display in her campy new project.
Look, if you've paid attention to recent box office reports, you know that the movie Barbie has been one of the cinematic hits of the summer.
Audiences have fallen in love with Barbie all over again. But Sandy has had her eye on someone else- Ken. In the movie, Ken yearns to forge his own identity. Sandy, with her incredible artistic skill and wicked sense of humor, is giving him that identity. Actually, that's an understatement. She's giving him LOTS of identities. Ken's gone from buff and bleach-blonde beach-bod to horror movie hunk!
Sandy, who hails from Boonville, Indiana, has been hitting up her local Walmart, where she is stocking up on $5 Ken dolls. She's then turning those dolls into tributes to famed horror movie and pop culture icons.
Take a look at some of her masterful hand-painted creations! We'll start with a great 'before and after' transformation.
MICHAEL JACKSON from THRILLER
MICHAEL MYERS from HALLOWEEN
CHUCKY from CHILD'S PLAY
JASON VOORHEES from FRIDAY THE 13TH
In addition to turning Ken into classic horror movie villains, she's also turning the dolls into some fun pop culture icons.
DAVID BOWIE
Here's a great closeup of David's (er, I mean Ken's) face!
ELVIRA
And then there's Ken's transformation into The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.
Sandy has a history of perfecting makeup for The Grinch. In addition to turning Ken into the beloved Dr. Seuss villain, she's also turned herself into him.
Sandy says, when it comes to the Ken dolls, she just gets an idea and goes with it. She says it takes her about a day to complete one doll and, for now, she's just doing the Ken transformations as a hobby. However, she's not opposed to creating some by request and special order. In fact, she's already filling a couple of such orders for friends. Her work speaks for itself.
FUN COLLECTION (including BEETLEJUICE)
If Ken wanted his own identity, he's certainly found it with Sandy. I have a hunch he got a little more than he bargained for.
