General Motors is recalling over 600,000 trucks and SUVs due to a software error that could activate the braking system.

The issue with the vehicles stems from software problem that could randomly activate the driveline protection system, which could cause the vehicle to brake without warning.

Vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. affected by this recall include

  • 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2015-2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2014-2018 GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2015-2020 GMC Yukon

According to General Motors, 653,370 vehicles around the world could be potentially affected. As of now, no accidents have been reported.

If one of the wheel speed sensors fail, the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) software could activate the vehicle’s driveline protection system. This could cause the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor to brake, making the truck or SUV pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will reprogram the vehicles’ software free of charge. The recall number is N192261050
