As I get older, I find that I have less and less patience for most reality TV. That's not to say that I dislike all of it, that's not the case at all. I enjoy reality competition shows like Survivor and Top Chef. What I absolutely can NOT stand are shows like the "Real Housewives of Wherever" - shows that simply follow people around, putting them in unrealistic situations just to see what kind of drama they can create. I don't like to use the word 'hate' very often, but I really do hate that kind of reality TV.

Having made that bold statement, I fully recognize the hypocrisy of my next statement - I used to be a big fan of MTV's The Real World. Most people will say that the Real World was the original reality TV - like the show said

This is the true story...of seven strangers...picked to live in a house...work together...and have their lives taped...to find out what happens...when people stop being polite...and start getting real.

But you can't really compare what they did on the original season of The Real World to anything you'll see on Bravo or TLC these days. MTV really just tried to document the social experiment of putting a group of strangers, from all different walks of life, in a New York apartment together. As far as I know, they didn't intentionally put the cast into situations they knew would escalate, there was no coaching or prodding from producers - now, that's not to say that didn't happen in later Real World seasons.

That first season really was a milestone moment for the network and for television audiences everywhere - and that's why it's such a big deal to me that the original Real World cast is reuniting. The reunion won't just be a one-time thing either - it's going to be a multi-episode series featuring all seven original cast members. The series called The Real World Homecoming: New York, will be available on March 4th on the new Paramount + streaming service.

The network gives us a sneak peek (not nearly enough IMO) of the reunion special - and I am hooked!
