I think we can all agree that tax season is one of the most stressful times of the year. What form do I fill out? Do I have all of the forms I need to fill out this other form? There is so much to consider – that’s why a lot of folks will pay someone else to do their taxes, but that can get really expensive. Never fear – the United Way of Southwestern Indiana is here to help.

What The VITA Program Is And Who Qualifies

Let me tell you about the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program from the United Way. VITA offers FREE tax preparation and e-filing for individuals and families with an annual household income of $67,000 or less, people with disabilities, and adults 60 years of age and older. And in case you scrolled right past it, let me reiterate that this is a FREE program!

Why You Can Trust VITA Volunteers

And these aren’t just some knuckleheads with a calculator and nothing better to do. The VITA volunteers are IRS-certified, so you can feel confident knowing your return is done correctly. They’re trained to make sure you receive every tax credit you’re eligible for, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit, which can make a huge difference for working families.

During the 2025 tax season, VITA volunteers prepared over 1,000 tax returns and helped recover more than $1 million for people right here in our community.
