Ford Recalls Nearly One Million Vehicles Due To Air Bag Concerns

Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 953,000 vehicles to replace Takata passenger air bag inflators.Why? Because they have found that these air bag inflators can explode and hurl shrapnel. According to the Associated Press:

Takata used the chemical ammonium nitrate to create an explosion to inflate air bags. But it can deteriorate over time due to heat and humidity and explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister designed to contain the explosion. At least 23 people have been killed worldwide and hundreds injured by the inflators.

Ford says it doesn’t know of any injuries in vehicles included in this recall. Dealers will replace the inflators.

This is part of one of the largest recalls in U.S. history, as it includes over 782,000 vehicles in the country. Vehicles included in this air bag inflator recall include:

• 2010 Ford Edge
• 2010 Lincoln MKX
• 2010 and 2011 Ford Ranger
• 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion
• 2010 to 2012 Lincoln MKZ
• 2010 and 2011 Mercury Milan
• 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustang

According to the Associated Press, Ford will notify owners about the recall begining on February 18th. Owners will then be able to get their air bag inflators replaced at local dealers.
