Well, friends Fat Tuesday is upon us, and it's the final call for Mardi Gras treats. Many restaurants in the Evansville, Indiana area are preparing special menus for Mardi Gras. It is a week-long celebration of gumbo and every indulgent food you can think of.

As we get closer to Fat Tuesday in Southern Indiana several restaurants in the area will be getting into the Mardi Gras spirit by decking themselves out in the colors of the festival, handing out thousands of strands of beads, and of course, cooking up several Cajun favorites with special, limited-run menus to bring the flavor of the Big Easy to our backyard.

How do You Even Pronounce That?

One of my favorites is the hard-to-pronounce Paczki. It is not pronounced like it is spelled at all! Say it with me - Puhnch·Yee. It is kind of like you're punching a key.

Although, this professional Paczki maker gives us several ways to say it.

Here's a little history of Paczki. They are NOT just jelly donuts.

By the description, Paczki seems to have about the same recipe as a beignet, except they are filled with fruit jellies or custard. Paczki pronounced (Ponch-Key) is actually a polish treat that is popular right before Lent.

Mardi Gras Menu Favorites

There are a couple of new restaurants on this list this year. And of course, old favorites that have been offering Cajun favorites for years. The hard part will be picking which one to visit. Thankfully, the Mardi Gras celebration usually runs over the seven days leading up to Fat Tuesday, so you can stop by several of them. I'm sure that we will have more menus rolling in. Sometimes just the anticipation of the super seasonal menu is exciting!
