Thinking About an Easter Bunny? Here’s Where You Can Adopt One in Evansville!
Having a Pet Bunny is a Great Idea Year-Round
Yes Easter is right around the corner, and it is the time of year when adorable bunnies seem to be everywhere. And while a fluffy rabbit might look like the perfect Easter photo op, local shelters say adopting a bunny should be about giving a pet a forever home—not just a holiday surprise.
We talked to our friend Kendall Paul and she says bunnies make a great pet and there are several places in the Evansville area where you can adopt rabbits that truly need loving families.
One of the best places to start is Vanderburgh Humane Society, which regularly has adoptable rabbits available. In fact, the shelter currently lists several bunnies looking for homes, including Marshmallow and Gus-Gus. Rabbits there are already spayed or neutered and ready to meet their new families. It is suggested to get your bunny fixed because they can get pregnant very easily. I actually learned they can get pregnant 24 hours after just having babies.
Another great local option is It Takes a Village Canine Rescue Center. While they are best known for dogs, they’ve also helped rabbits in the Evansville area find homes through their rescue network.
Why rabbits make great pets all year
The big thing to remember is that rabbits are so much more than an Easter tradition.
They’re social, smart, and full of personality. Many rabbit owners say their bunnies learn routines, use litter boxes, enjoy toys, and bond closely with their humans.
Rabbits can also be a wonderful fit for families who want a quieter pet than a dog, while still having an animal that’s affectionate and playful.
They also live much longer than people sometimes realize often 8 to 12 years so adoption should be looked at as a long-term commitment, not a seasonal gift. Community rabbit advocates often remind people that many Easter bunnies sadly end up abandoned once the holiday excitement fades.
The best reason to adopt
The best part of rabbit adoption is knowing you’re giving an animal a second chance.
Shelters often see an increase in rabbits around Easter, which makes choosing adoption especially meaningful this time of year. Instead of buying from a pet store, adopting helps local rescues free up space and continue helping more animals in the Tri-State.
So if your family has been seriously thinking about adding a bunny, this could be the perfect time to meet one of Evansville’s adoptable rabbits and maybe find your new best friend.
