The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) announced that Evansville’s Demolition City Roller Derby (DCRD) qualified for the 2014 WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Aug. 22-24. DCRD’s opponent in the first round will be its first international opponent, Bear City Roller Derby from Berlin, Germany.

In order to qualify for the WFTDA tournament, DCRD needed to rank in the top 60 of the 259 full member leagues. The team was able to garner a #8 seed in the Kitchener-Waterloo Division 2 Playoff on the strength of its final June ranking.

“Qualifying for the WFTDA Playoffs is absolutely a dream come true for us” said DCRD All-Star co-captain Sam Ramsey. “Our main goal this year was to work hard and prove we were worthy of making it to this tournament. We knew it was within reach with the talent we possess on the track, but we also knew it would take a lot of hard work and sweat equity.”

“Now that we’ve reached our goal, our focus is to show the international world of roller derby that Evansville, Indiana has the most talented, competitive, and strongest women athletes in the world!” Ramsey added.

The following teams will be joining Demolition City in Canada Aug. 22-24 to compete for a shot at advancing to the WFTDA Championships in November. The top two teams from each of the two D2 Playoffs will advance to the WFTDA Championships to compete in the Division 2 Championship and Third Place games.
