Historic World War II Aircraft Coming to Evansville Wartime Museum
Two legendary pieces of World War II history will touch down in Evansville this summer, and it’s an event that aviation fans, history buffs, and families alike won’t want to miss!
From July 30 through August 2, the Evansville Wartime Museum and Evansville Regional Airport will host the B-29 DOC History Restored Tour, featuring two iconic warbirds that helped shape history: the legendary B-29 Superfortress “DOC” and the famous P-51 Mustang “Gunfighter.”
And these aren’t just replicas or museum displays. These historic aircraft still fly.
The B-29 DOC is One of a Kind
DOC is one of only two airworthy Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers left in the world today. That’s pretty incredible when you consider that more than 1,600 of them were originally built during World War II. The massive bomber played a major role in the war effort and remains one of the most recognizable aircraft in aviation history.
Meet the Legendary P-51 Gunfighter
Joining DOC in Evansville will be the P-51 Gunfighter, a beautifully restored D-model Mustang fighter plane. During World War II, around 15,000 P-51 Mustangs were produced, but fewer than 150 still exist today.
Evansville Has Deep World War II Connections
What makes this visit even more special is Evansville’s own connection to World War II history. Our city played a huge role in America’s wartime production efforts, from the Republic Aviation P-47 Thunderbolt factory to the LST Shipyard and the Evansville Ordinance Plant. Evansville’s designation as a World War II Heritage City makes this event feel especially meaningful for the community.
Visitors will have the chance to walk right up to the aircraft during public ramp access hours, and cockpit tours aboard DOC will also be available.
General admission tickets can be purchased at the event and cost $20 for adults, $10 for kids ages 5-15, while children 4 and under get in free. A family four-pack is also available for $60. For those wanting the ultimate bucket-list experience, ride flights aboard the aircraft are available for purchase now through the official DOC and Gunfighter websites.

This is one of those rare events that combines history, excitement, and hometown pride all in one place. Evansville is about to hear the sound of history flying overhead once again.
