Do you remember, back in the day, sitting around a campfire and exchanging scary stories? In my opinion, the scariest stories were the ones rooted in the truth. It’s the same with scary movies - there is just something a little extra creepy about the ones that claim to be “based on a true story.” I guess all urban legends have some teeny tiny element of truth – the story has to come from somewhere, right?

The Haunting Tale of Agar’s Grave in Henderson, KY

A friend recently told me about a famous grave just across the river in Henderson (Spottsville), Kentucky. It’s a spot that has been sending chills down the spine of ghost hunters, history buffs, and big weenies like me for a long time. I’m talking about AGAR’S GRAVE.

The Man, the Myth, the Werewolf?

Legend has it that Agar (nobody seems to know his first name) liked to howl at the moon. He would bark and growl at people, causing some locals to think he might actually be a werewolf. When Agar eventually died, the townsfolk decided to chain down his grave (with silver, of course) in an effort to keep him from coming back.

Rattling Chains and a Smoking Grave

It’s those chains that have led to one of the two urban legends about Agar’s Grave. According to the Haunted History of Kentucky Facebook page, folks have reported hearing chains rattling when approaching Agar’s grave. The other urban legend about his grave is even more interesting. Agar must have been a heavy smoker, because people claim that if you put a lit cigarette in the ground at his grave, you can see Agar taking a puff from underneath.

I can’t seem to find a confirmed location for Agar’s Grave, but the trusty internet says it’s reported to be at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Spottsville. Google also says that the name “Agar” is not found in official cemetery records.
