Jay is trained in pronunciation and recorded the word for Vocabulary.com back in 2007.  The word he recorded was "Laurel."

According to The Sun,

He said he is “amused to no end” that his voice has been the source of such worldwide debate.

Jay added: “I thought, well, it couldn't be that huge. Then I heard the recording again online and I realised what a brouhaha this whole thing was.”
