Karen Maxey, a Teamster with the EVSC, is hosting her 4th Annual Back to School Shoe Drive. Last year over 200 pairs of new and gently used shoes were donated and distributed to several of our EVSC schools.

This year her goal is to collect 300 pairs of new and gently used shoes. Saturday August 5th in front of AIS Diamond Ave. (Stringtown Rd. entrance), from 9:00 am-2:00 pm she will be collecting shoes, socks and money.  All shoes donated will be given to Hangers, a clothing shop inside AIS that supplies clothing, shoes, and essentials to area students in need at no cost.

Shoes sizes youth to adult sizes are needed. Any type of shoe will be accepted. (Gym, dress, and boots.) Remember, if your child would wear the shoes, so will these kids. Any monies donated will be taken to local stores to purchase shoes.

Last year, Hangers serviced 2,190 students. This means that 2,190 students not only received clothing but a new pair of shoes. Hangers expects to see over 1000 student within the first few months of school this year.

This event came about when Karen witnessed a little boy ask the school social worker for a new pair of shoes. His shoes were too small and being held together with duct tape. Later that afternoon she witnessed the boy’s excitement when he showed his dad his gently used new pair of shoes.

This tugged at Karen's heart so much that she posted to her friends and family that she had a goal of collecting 100 pairs of new and gently used shoes to be donated to Cedar Hall Elementary School. She was able to collect 200 pair that were distributed to several area schools.
