Our thoughts and prayers go out the Collier family and to the Castle High School family as one of their students was killed while sledding over the weekend.

According to several media reports, 16-year-old Davis Collier, who was a Junior at Castle High School was killed after her sled ran into the road and she was struck by a car.

Collier was sledding near the Newburgh Lock and Dam around 10pm on Saturday Night when her sled ran into the road. She was struck and killed by a car driving by Galina Witte.

Witte was arrested after an investigation and charged with Operating While Intoxicated with a Prior Conviction and Operating While Intoxicated Endangering.

Witte had previously been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and giving probation in December of 2017.

Castle High School opened their auditorium yesterday and provided grieve counselors for those students and families that needed it.

Town of Newburgh officials have closed down French Island trail to traffic until further notice.
