68 Dogs Rescued From Hoarding Situation in Evansville Need Your Help

68 dogs were seized from a hoarding situation this week in Vanderburgh County and local animal rescue organizations are asking for the public's help to care for these animals.

It Takes A Village Canine Rescue, a local no-kill dog rescue, is asking for the public's help with the 25 dogs that they have taken into their care as a result of a hoarding incident involving 68 dogs being pulled from a porperty in Vanderburgh County. For months, It Take a Village has been working to help the dogs seized, trying to make sure the dogs who needed heartworm treatment were vetted and also attempted to reduce the number of dogs at the property.  There were 6 dogs that had already been rescued by It Takes a Village. Four of those six where heartworm positive. An investigation was launched by Animal control after a deceased, emaciated dog was taken to animal control by the person responsible for the dogs. It Takes a Village President and Attorney, Susan Odoyo, submitted a witness statement to animal control as part of the investigation.  The matter was turned over to Vanderburgh Country Sheriff’s Department for further investigation.  On February 28th, the sheriff’s department went to the property but found the caregiver for the animals was not home.  The Sheriff’s Department then secured a search warrant for the property and seized all the dogs - 68 all in total.

It Takes a Village was contacted to assist in removing the dogs from the property and placing them into foster care. As the first rescue on scene, It Takes a Village worked with the sheriff's department and animal control for over 7 hours at the property. The guardian of the dogs did eventually arrive at the property and legally surrendered 40+ to the care of It Takes a Village.  All 68 dogs were then transported to three locations - Evansville Animal Control, It Takes a Village Canine Rescue and Vanderburgh Humane Society.  A total of 25 dogs are now in the care of It Takes a Village as a result of this incident. Many of the dogs are in need of extensive medical treatment and because of this, It Takes a Village is seeking fosters and asking for monetary donations for the care of the dogs. All donations are tax-deductible and a portion of all donations will be donated to Evansville Animal Care and Control's Spirit's Medical Fund.  Evansville Animal Control will be responsible for the care of 20+ dogs who were not surrendered to rescue and will be held while the case proceeds through the court system.
